Minutes
Meeting minutes: March 15, 2008
Present: Sue, Peggy, Jeff, Meiling, Ellen, Jeff, and Renee
Student Access Workshop Debrief
Peggy says:
Loved the space at Peace
Peace donated $350
Resumes were great
Registration packet very comprehensive and helpful for students
On-line registration was great
Liked the fact we opened up the workshop to high school students
Meiling:
Turnout was great
Two speakers (Dan Barkin and Nanette Wilson) on the panel worked out well
Renee:
Moderator should ask a few questions to get discussion going then open up to questions so students can interact
Some students complained theæroom setup made it hard to hear and TVs were distracting
Other pluses:
Groups balanced
All small group leaders showed up
If there is one thing we should do differently, Peggy says we should give ourselves more time to plan.
Ellen suggests we do a paper survey instead of on-line survey to increase response
Ellen: Is student workshop a two-person job? Consensus from group: good to have one contact person, but tasks can easily be divided between two people. Overall, it was a team effort to pull this event off.
Sue wants to make sure we don't drop the ball of reaching out to people-- for the next outing Sue wants us to individually contact members
Looking into setting up a weekend lunch for next outing-- Renee says many members, especially broadcast, aren't available nights or weekend
Ellen: Unity update
wants someone to volunteer to help her plan the MAW workshop (panelists or participants) will wait a month to see if someone else is going to UNITY and see if anyone else is interested in volunteering
Sees it as another opportunity for someone to become more involved in our chapter
2 million endowment drive for AAJA's 25th anniversary
AAJA raised $1.2 million and is looking for fundraising chair from every chapter (point person) to help approach people and companies and raise a total of $200,000
Ellen would be happy to be fundraising chair-- board unanimously nominates Ellen
UNITY:
As a chapter, we have to come up with items to auction
Sue's already started the effort
--Duke will give autographed photo of Coach K
--contacting Canes
--contacted Pinehurst for golf package
--will ask Wendy if she will help; she handled the auction items for UNITY '07 and did a fabulous job
Website:
To blog or have a website?
Dreamweaver too complicated and cumbersome for simple changes
Meiling suggests going to a blog format
Board talked about spend ingsome time to research various types of blogs and see what would work best for AAJA-NC's needs
Sue and Ellen will look at blogs and give board a recommendation by next meeting
Budget Update from Jeff
Have more than $4250 in account
Sue brought up possibility of interest-bearing account... Jeff thinks we should keep it all in cash reserve until we exceed $5,000.
Peggy talked about how we can reach out to our Media Access group participants this year, since it's an off-year for MAW
She plans on sending a letter/e-mail explaining why we're not doing a MAW this year. Instead, we will send updated contacts and case studies of media coverage for this year
Peggy needs help updating contacts--send her any new contacts you may have
Triangle UNITY mixer: tentatively early June.
Location to be determined.
Meiling will reach out to Ken Smith, president of TABJ, to see if they are interested and if TABJ will take the lead in planning the event.
